The Big Lebowski is one of my favourite films ever.
I'm considering basing my lifestyle on The Dude. If I just take up bowling then I'm all set.

I agree, the Big Lebowski is probably the most consistently funny I think i've ever seen. The script is a really good read too. I havent seen the Coens' early stuff, Miller's Crossing and Raising Arizona but I've loved everything else they've done.
One thing about the Coens is that you'll never see a bad performance in any of their movies. They bring the best out of pretty much anyone they work with.

Hey,
I have yet to see Fargo, and Raising Arizona. But I love Blood Simple, which is a really big independent benchmark for the do it yourself crowd.

I love Lebowski, Blood Simple, and Raising Arizona.
Fargo and O'Brother, Where Art Thou, unfortunately are not up to par as they both suffer from anti-climactic endings, especially in the latter's case, but they are both great otherwise.

For a quirky/bleak movie set in the prohibition-era, would recommend 'Miller's Crossing'. 'The Hudsucker Proxy' is similar though slightly goofier, set around the same timeframe, but about corporate business rather than gangsters.

'Barton Fink' and 'The Hudscucker Proxy' are by far my favourites.
Their most recent one 'Intolerable Cruelty' is TERRIBLE! What a sell-out, couldn't believe it (does have a good title sequence though).

Rasing Arizona is pretty damn hilarious. I like Fargo a lot - lots of memorable dialogue.
They've definitely mastered the absurd.

i am not a fan of the coens, i know i must be one of the few on the planet but i really dont like their work, the only ones i have kind of like where Hudsucker Proxy and Crimewave, but that may just the Sam Raimi aspect of them,
However having said that the trailer for their new one ladykillers ( http://ladykillers.movies.go.com/main.html ) looks ok.
